In Belgium\, passenger transport is forecast to grow by 9% and freight transport by 62% between 2012 and 2030. ÖBB plans to double the capacity of its main lines by 2040. Greater infrastructure availability is essential\, while long diversions and rail replacement services must be minimized. \nWith track possessions becoming shorter and a shortage of qualified staff\, infrastructure managers and contractors face major challenges. Progressive automation of track maintenance machines offers a solution. Digital products support operating staff\, reduce interfaces\, create process reliability\, and increase the output achieved. Familiarization times and training requirements for operation go down. In addition\, staff can now monitor and carry out several maintenance tasks simultaneously. \nAutomated/robot-supported rail and switch maintenance – Dr. Michael Reiter\, Robel Rail Automation\nIn order to cope with the required growth in rail traffic in the coming years\, it is essential to further increase the availability of the railway infrastructure. With shorter maintenance windows and a shrinking workforce of skilled rail welders\, infrastructure managers are under pressure to maintain reliability and reduce life cycle management costs. \nAn advanced robotic welding system is now proving that the future of railway maintenance is smart\, efficient and fully automated. \nSwitches are one of the most maintenance intensive components of railway infrastructure. They take a beating from constant train traffic\, and when they fail they cause major disruption. SUMMARY:Piccadilly Line upgrade: engineering challenges & contributing carbon net zero 2030
DESCRIPTION:Ashraff Cader\, CEng\, FICE and Amarnath Paul\, CEng\, MICE\nOverview: The Piccadilly Line Upgrade (PLU) will provide new trains and associated infrastructure to modernise the Piccadilly Line. The PLU is spilt into two stages: \n\nStage 1\, the introduction of a new rolling stock fleet and associated enabling works\nStage 2 – a full upgrade of the Piccadilly Line signalling system to a modern digital network\n\nPLU Stage 1 is a £2.8bn programme that will provide a new fleet of air-cooled modern trains for the Piccadilly Line with improved reliability\, efficiency and accessibility\, together with new and expanded maintenance and stabling facilities. Stage 1 will result in a 23% uplift in peak capacity with trains running at 27 trains per hour or a train every 2 minutes 13 seconds. Full introduction of the new fleet and the subsequent timetable uplift is planned for early to mid-2027.
