SUMMARY:Satellites & soil moisture: Advances in asset resilience in the face of climate change
DESCRIPTION:Mark Hinton\, UK Director & Jonathan Lynch\, Ground Engineering Lead\, ASTERRA UK\nPWI Lunch & Learn\nSynopsis: Earth Observation – using satellites for remote sensing – can be applied to detect and map sub surface soil moisture which can be an important consideration in geotechnical assets such as railways cuttings and embankments. These earthwork assets are known to deteriorate over time and can fail\, due for example to drainage maintenance issues. When climate change effects are introduced into the asset modelling the deterioration is markedly accelerated – emphasizing the need for better modelling and planning ahead of both maintenance and mitigations especially when budget constraints demand that more is to be done with less. This session will review the growing geotechnical challenges with regards to soil moisture\, and introduce the use of remote sensing techniques to provide tools to meet the challenge for our critical national infrastructure\, such as rail networks\, where intelligent infrastructure management is required at scale. \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer\, mobile app or room device \nClick here to join the meeting \nMeeting ID: 386 438 751 467\nPasscode: z76AFn \nDownload Teams | Join on the web \nOr call in (audio only) \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,34260906#   United Kingdom\, London \nPhone Conference ID: 342 609 06# \nIf you are a PWI member please login first before booking if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Railway ballast & slope stabilisation
DESCRIPTION:Bryan Wedin\, Chief Design Engineer\, Presto Geosystems\nPWI Lunch & Learn\nSynopsis: Ballast degradation can rapidly occur under heavy axle loadings over soft subgrade soils. Ballast failure can lead to speed reductions\, track downtime\, and costly maintenance and repairs. In railroad applications\, the GEOWEB® Ballast Stabilisation System reduces the vertical pressure reaching the subgrade and provides a high-stiffness foundation. GEOWEB-stabilised ballast significantly reduces ballast movement\, aggregate rotation\, and rail settlement—resulting in increased ballast life and long-term performance. \nAttendees will : \n\nUnderstand the benefits of GEOWEB-stabilised ballast from accredited research and testing.\nLearn how the GEOWEB stabilisation system can reduce vertical ballast pressure and ballast movement.\nUnderstand the typical applications for GEOWEB ballast stabilisation.\nLearn how to apply GEOWEB stabilisation to extend rail life and reduce maintenance.\n\nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer\, mobile app or room device \nClick here to join the meeting \nMeeting ID: 366 147 732 552\nPasscode: DgDVza \nDownload Teams | Join on the web \nOr call in (audio only) \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,841613785#   United Kingdom\, London \nPhone Conference ID: 841 613 785# \nIf you are a PWI member please login first before booking if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Inserting structures under main lines using rails and jacking systems
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Furtmueller\, Project Manager and Thomas Attwenger\, ATROS-Europe\nPWI Lunch & Learn\nSynopsis: Conventional methods of renewing or realigning underpasses can mean the line is closed and mainline service interrupted for a considerable time. The ATROS system minimises operational disruption by allowing insertion of the undertrack structures using pre-installed rails and a jacking system to move the structure to its final position under track. Thus minimising the time required for line closure and speed restrictions. \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer\, mobile app or room device \nClick here to join the meeting \nMeeting ID: 327 779 919 48\nPasscode: 7LVTKC \nDownload Teams | Join on the web \nOr call in (audio only) \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,758991942#   United Kingdom\, London \nPhone Conference ID: 758 991 942# \nIf you are a PWI member please login first before booking if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Meeting the challenge of Railhead Adhesion
DESCRIPTION:Julian Swan\, Chief Executive Office\, Plasmatrack and Jess Logan\, Plasmatrack\nPWI Lunch & Learn\nSynopsis: PlasmaTrack Leaves on the Line Track Sensor Railways tackles the costly issue of leaves on tracks during Autumn. It is an innovative technology to measure\, analyze and predict railway conditions enabling pre-emptive mitigation and stop ‘Leaves on the line’ delays. \nPlasmaTrack uncovered this novel sensing technology during the development of its plasma track cleaning technology sponsored by the RSSB Predictable & Optimised Braking programme. PlasmaTrack used a RAMAN sensor to analyse the ‘leaf layer’ and help understand the effects of high energy plasma on contaminated track. It has now embarked on a Department for Transport Funded First of a Kind (FOAK) project to develop technology from a scientific laboratory system into a Railway Ready demonstrator suitable for deployment by Network Rail. \n3 Months into the 12-month programme we will introduce the technology\, the programme and report on initial findings. \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer\, mobile app or room device \nClick here to join the meeting \nMeeting ID: 356 547 174 399\nPasscode: 9HCQXL \nDownload Teams | Join on the web \nOr call in (audio only) \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,81765632#   United Kingdom\, London \nPhone Conference ID: 817 656 32# \nIf you are a PWI member and would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio\, you will need to login and register for the event. SUMMARY:Sensorless Wayside Sensing
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Pyke\, Content Creation & Strategic Marketing Expert\, Sensonic Ltd\nPWI Lunch & Learn\nSynopsis: Monitoring the permanent way without adding a multitude of sensors along its length may seem like science fiction\, but it is already here. Using clever technology and existing fibre optic cables (often from our S&T colleagues)\, we can turn optical fibres into vibration sensors\, able to detect and pinpoint vibrations along their entire length. This Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology has numerous applications including landslide and rock fall detection\, track health monitoring\, pinpointing difficult to locate incidents such as electrical flashovers and site security. \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer\, mobile app or room device \nClick here to join the meeting \nMeeting ID: 352 205 470 163\nPasscode: QDEi6j \nDownload Teams | Join on the web \nOr call in (audio only) \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,177826314#   United Kingdom\, London \nPhone Conference ID: 177 826 314# \nIf you are a PWI member and would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio\, you will need to login and register for the event.
