SUMMARY:Boots off Ballast: Transforming How We Inspect\, Maintain\, and Operate the Railway
DESCRIPTION:Dr Sin Sin Hsu\, Regional Engineer [Track\, Drainage and Off Track]\, Eastern\, Network Rail\nRailEI Lunch & Learn\nThis presentation outlines Network Rail’s “Boots Off Ballast” transformation programme\, reducing trackside working by adopting technologies such as AI‑enabled video inspection\, downward‑ and forward‑facing cameras\, remote condition monitoring\, and Unattended Geometry Measurement Systems.   With a vast and dispersed rail asset base\, rising safety risks\, and increasing performance demands\, digital tools now enable earlier defect detection\, improved hot‑weather resilience\, and significant time savings. Case studies show proactive identification of broken rails\, poor track geometry\, and other failures\, preventing delays and enhancing reliability. Ongoing innovation\, partnerships\, and data‑driven maintenance are central to achieving safer\, smarter\, and more efficient railway operations. \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/395902263031430?p=GLRYDVFAoziHDxmIbI \nMeeting ID: 395 902 263 031 430 \nPasscode: yT2q9Yi7 \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,556261028# United Kingdom\, City of London \nFind a local number \nPhone conference ID: 556 261 028# \nIf you are a RailEI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Advanced S&C Systems Engineering Mod 1 - June 2026
DESCRIPTION:RailEI Advanced Switch & Crossing Systems Engineering Course\nModule 1\nProgramme aim\nPoints\, Switches and Crossings (P&C\, S&C) are critical to railway performance\, yet maintenance of these assets often lack complete coordination between the track and signalling teams. The Advanced S&C Systems Engineering course bridges this gap. Equipping engineers with the knowledge and tools to optimise reliability\, reduce failures and improve safety and train performance. \nThe course will contain case studies of how to run effective PLANNED PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE regimes for S&C and how to identify and analyse potential failure modes for track and signalling components. The course will be 60% track theory and 40% signalling theory. \nEnhance understanding of signalling and track design and maintenance principles and interfaces. \nOne course\, two weeks. \nFor full details and to download a booking form CLICK HERE \n

SUMMARY:Why PVT is not the MVP – Challenging the Principle of Virtual Transition
DESCRIPTION:Constantin Ciobanu\, Associate\, Transportation\, Rail\, AECOM\nWest of England Section hybrid meeting\nConstantin will present several challenges to the Principle of Virtual Transition (PVT)\, a Pway calculation principle used in the UK and a few other countries to evaluate the viability of not inserting a transition curve in a track alignment.\nUsing simple and easy to reproduce alignment checks\, common-sense logic and well documented research\, Constantin will demonstrate that this principle is not providing a Minimum Viable Product solution to track alignment designs. He will also show the method used all around the world as a more viable alternative to this old Permanent Way maths principle of design. \nMeeting in person from 12:45 for a 13:00 start for all.\nYou can also join the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams. \nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/37824878790768?p=f9SGwrCFKf9zaDLS10 \nMeeting ID: 378 248 787 907 68 \nPasscode: bW3FM7Di \nNeed help? | System reference \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,469193532# United Kingdom\, City of London \nIf you are a RailEI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE
