SUMMARY:Basic steel metallurgy and the effect of rail section on rail stress and defect growth
DESCRIPTION:Andy Franklin\, Retired Permanent Way Engineer and RailEI Technical Education Lecturer\nThames Valley Section hybrid meeting\nThis presentation is in two parts and is intended to give track engineers an understanding in the basic concepts underlying rail management.\nThe first part looks at the metallurgy of plain carbon steels and the effects of carbon content and heat treating. There is a brief look at the effects of alloying and a case study of how it can go wrong!\nThe second section looks at how the section shape and manufacturing affects rail stress and the growth of rail defects. There is a reminder on basic section properties and bending theory.\nThere are things to do so you may wish to bring a sheet of A4 paper and your calculator! \nMeeting in-person from 17:00 for refreshments courtesy of RailEI for a 17:45 start for all. \nYou can also join the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams. \nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/365186690592261?p=I18kPGZITbuB72pxEC \nMeeting ID: 365 186 690 592 261 \nPasscode: xQ75kL7y \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,377926115# United Kingdom\, City of London \nFind a local number \nPhone conference ID: 377 926 115# \nIf you are a RailEI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Lawrence Hill Track & Drainage Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Mark Howells\, Senior Asset Engineer (Drainage)\, Network Rail (Great Western Route)\nThames Valley Section hybrid meeting\nMark will describe how the relief lines 6ft drainage system at Lawrence Hill station\, Bristol was renewed at the same time as the plain line track in August 2024. With particular focus on the steps taken to develop the drainage design including the checking of calculations and assessment of the adjacent catchment to determine the most appropriate intervention. Mark will discuss specification matters pertaining to BS9295:2020 with respect to ring stiffness and use of twin walled pipes in dynamic environments such as the track support zone with reference to EN1446 and ISO9969. In addition\, Mark will describe the delivery of track and drainage during the same possession and express his views on how suitable this approach is. \nMeeting in-person from 17:00 for refreshments courtesy of RailEI for a 17:45 start for all. \nYou can also join the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams. \nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/378027979566416?p=8SKmDyXanq4k9LM26k \nMeeting ID: 378 027 979 566 416 \nPasscode: u7VE9LP6 \nNeed help? | System reference \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,703604733# United Kingdom\, City of London \nFind a local number \nPhone conference ID: 703 604 733# \nIf you are a RailEI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:The Western Route Capacity – Back to the Future
DESCRIPTION:Howard Pack\, Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport Group (CILT)\nThames Valley Section hybrid meeting\nJoint meeting with Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics (CILT)\nFocusing closer to home on “Western Route Capacity – Back to the Future”\, Howard will talk about work done in 2016 to understand how the passenger and freight traffic forecasts from 2015 to 2043 could be reconciled with the existing infrastructure and the new passenger rolling stock. The complex study involved modelling and identifying the time period break points at which new infrastructure or rolling stock would be needed and the physical locations and interventions. Howard will make this understandable by outlining designs for grade separated junctions\, remodelling Paddington and the Didcot to Oxford corridor; and even using double-decker trains to maximise train capacity and obviate building new lines. \nMeeting in-person from 17:00 for refreshments courtesy of RailEI for a 17:45 start for all. \nYou can also join the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams. \nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/376498555195546?p=hxyfCIAOi45kwd8EGm \nMeeting ID: 376 498 555 195 546 \nPasscode: oU2jR9ac \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,926597566# United Kingdom\, City of London \nFind a local number \nPhone conference ID: 926 597 566# \nIf you are a RailEI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE
