SUMMARY:Advanced Track Technician Mod 1 - September 2026
DESCRIPTION:RailEI Advanced Track Technician Course\nModule 1 – Introduction to Track Theory\, Practice and Surveying\nDelegates will learn how innovations in survey\, design\, maintenance\, renewal\, and project work can be harnessed to help make safe and efficient plans. Diversity and sustainability issues will be explored\, as will the interdependencies between the various engineering functions and train operations\, so that key management skills including decision making\, prioritisation\, record keeping\, data analysis\, and report writing are developed. Practical skills will be developed in plain line and S&C surveying and inspection\, rail and rail defect management\, mechanised alignment maintenance\, and rail stressing. \nFor full details and to download a booking form CLICK HERE \n

SUMMARY:Advanced S&C Systems Engineering Mod 2 - September 2026
DESCRIPTION:RailEI Advanced Switch & Crossing Systems Engineering Course\nModule 2\nProgramme aim\nPoints\, Switches and Crossings (P&C\, S&C) are critical to railway performance\, yet maintenance of these assets often lack complete coordination between the track and signalling teams. The Advanced S&C Systems Engineering course bridges this gap. Equipping engineers with the knowledge and tools to optimise reliability\, reduce failures and improve safety and train performance. \nThe course will contain case studies of how to run effective PLANNED PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE regimes for S&C and how to identify and analyse potential failure modes for track and signalling components. The course will be 60% track theory and 40% signalling theory. \nEnhance understanding of signalling and track design and maintenance principles and interfaces. \nOne course\, two weeks. \nFor full details and to download a booking form CLICK HERE \n

SUMMARY:Basic steel metallurgy and the effect of rail section on rail stress and defect growth
DESCRIPTION:Andy Franklin\, Retired Permanent Way Engineer and RailEI Technical Education Lecturer\nThames Valley Section hybrid meeting\nThis presentation is in two parts and is intended to give track engineers an understanding in the basic concepts underlying rail management.\nThe first part looks at the metallurgy of plain carbon steels and the effects of carbon content and heat treating. There is a brief look at the effects of alloying and a case study of how it can go wrong!\nThe second section looks at how the section shape and manufacturing affects rail stress and the growth of rail defects. There is a reminder on basic section properties and bending theory.\nThere are things to do so you may wish to bring a sheet of A4 paper and your calculator! \nMeeting in-person from 17:00 for refreshments courtesy of RailEI for a 17:45 start for all. \nYou can also join the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams. \nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/365186690592261?p=I18kPGZITbuB72pxEC \nMeeting ID: 365 186 690 592 261 \nPasscode: xQ75kL7y \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,377926115# United Kingdom\, City of London \nFind a local number \nPhone conference ID: 377 926 115# \nIf you are a RailEI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE
