DESCRIPTION:Jonathon Stelling\, Product Manager\, Hitachi Rail\nNottingham & Derby Section hybrid meeting\nMobile monitoring of these systems generates a wide range of information not only to the alert of defects but also historical information for trend analysis to aid preventative maintenance. As the requirement for near real-time monitoring increases and the endless insights this information can deliver\, justifies the reason for extending coverage from Network Rails dedicated measurement fleet to passenger vehicles. \nThis presentation examines Unattended Track Geometry Measurement Systems (UGMS)\, covering their integration onto passenger borne rolling stock and the full process of capturing\, processing and visualising data within HMAX RAVE while geolocating additional datasets such as high resolution linescan imagery and aggregated axle box acceleration data to deliver richer contextual insight. \nRAVE visualises UGMS data from several Hitachi operated passenger fleets across the East Coast Mainline\, Great Western\, TransPennine and West of England routes\, joining geometry measurements with high resolution linescan imagery and aggregated axle box acceleration data with precision accuracy. This combined view provides a unified track assessment\, enabling stronger defect validation and earlier identification of degradation patterns that may not be evident from geometry data alone. \nThe demand for high‑volume\, high‑precision datasets introduces significant challenges in processing\, storage\, and validation. DESCRIPTION:Andy Batters\, Senior Project Manager\, AEGIS Rail / IKOS Group\nNottingham & Derby Section in-person meeting\nSupported by IMechE Rail Division North-East Region and Young Rail Professionals East Midlands Region\nAndy will commence with explaining how lateral and vertical track geometry defects are traditionally measured using the tamping machines themselves\, and how the remedial action necessary is then calculated and delivered. He will then explain how more accurate and durable outputs were achieved through development of ‘intelligent’ tamping and lining techniques such as Design Overlift and Automatic Line and Level Control (ALC). Finally\, Andy will provide an insight into some of the most recent technological developments that have been incorporated into the latest generation of tamping machines. This presentation will be wide-ranging and will be of interest not only to early-career members\, but also to more experienced members who may be keen to understand how track maintenance engineers are continuing to capitalise on developments in the field. \nAndy has over 30 years experience managing and leading railway plant fleets on infrastructure maintenance\, renewal and construction projects. Car registration logging will be disabled for the evening. \nIn 2017\, SPL won the contract to electrify the Bedford to Kettering and Corby section of the Midland Main Line. In Sept 2020 they were awarded the extension from Kettering to Wigston as part of the National Electrification Programme. Both schemes were delivered on time and on budget. \nThe presentation will explore how SPL delivered these projects by introducing new and novel innovative ideas to electrification. These projects have been delivered through a time of ever changing standards and new processes to reduce the cost of electrification. They also developed a new basic design range of Overhead Contact Systems (OCS) equipment with Network Rail as part of the route development. SUMMARY:Barking Riverside extension slab track - from design to construction
DESCRIPTION:Barnaby Temple\, Head of Consultancy & Engineering Services\, Rhomberg Sersa\nNottingham & Derby Section in-person meeting\nSynopsis: Barnaby will introduce the BRE project and go into details on some of the challenges faced in the design and cover how these were dealt with also in construction. These include track-structure interaction\, tolerances and the challenges of real 3D and the UK first precast slab track S&C. The slab track was largely on a 1.5km long viaduct with over 30 separate structure decks and combined steep gradients\, tight radii\, a scissors crossover and terminus station. \nMeeting in-person from 17:00 for a 17:30 start. In the first we will look at phases and crystalline structures\, the Iron-Iron Carbide Equilibrium Diagram\, the effect of carbon content on steel properties\, what happens when steel is heated and why it is important to control this. In the second part we will look at rail sections and their properties\, the effect of shape on structural properties\, the bending of beams\, residual stresses and defect growth and critical defect size. \nMeeting in-person from 17:00 for a 17:30 start.
