It will replace a diesel train\, keep to the same timetable and charge in just over 3 minutes. Find out how and why this is possible. \nPresenter: Julian Fletcher is a pioneering engineer with experience working on battery train projects for several years; In 2020\, he decided to leave the aerospace industry\, where he had spent over 20 years at the cutting edge of gas turbine development. He is now at the engineering heart of the UK’s battery train industry\, working on the final stages of demonstrating fast charging technology. This enables battery trains to have practically limitless range. As well as passenger trains\, he’s worked on locomotive and track maintenance vehicle conversions. DESCRIPTION:Dr Mark Burstow\, Principal Vehicle Track Dynamics Engineer\, Network Rail\nBirmingham Section in person meeting\n*NEW VENUE* – meeting at 17:00 for a 17:15 start \nSynopsis: The talk will cover some of the fundamentals of wheel/rail interaction\, vehicle steering and the forces generated in the contact patch; and how this results in wear and fatigue on rails and wheels. Mark will then talk about how this understanding has been used to influence vehicle design and create incentives to reduce the impact of railway vehicles on track\, improving asset life. \nPresenter: Mark is a specialist in railway vehicle dynamics and computer simulation\, wheel/rail interaction\, and derailment investigation. His is currently Network Rail’s Principal Vehicle Track Dynamics Engineer with an interest in all aspects of vehicle track interaction and optimisation of the wheel/rail interface. Mark’s background is in fatigue and fracture mechanics: he gained a PhD in computer modelling of fracture mechanics from Sheffield University in 1992. Following this\, he worked as a post-doctoral research engineer\, investigating crack growth in pressure vessel welds for the nuclear power generation industry before joining the rail industry in 2001. In 2006 he joined Network Rail to work on the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) problem and investigate other wheel/rail interface problems. SUMMARY:UK’s longest rail viaduct – HS2 Colne Valley Viaduct
DESCRIPTION:Marwan El Jamous\, Project Director\, VSL\nBirmingham Section online meeting\nSpeaker: Marwan is the Project Director for the Colne Valley Viaduct and an integral part of the VSL Team delivering this flagship structure for HS2. Marwan has been with VSL for 15 years working on several high-profile international projects including post-tensioned segmental bridges for the Dubai Metro\, Hunts Bay Bridge – Jamaica\, Hodariyat Bridge\, Abu Dhabi\, and a 1.4km long viaduct in Debica\, Poland. \nSynopsis: The Colne Valley Viaduct (CVV) is the flagship structure on HS2 phase 1. The 3.4km long structure will be the longest railway bridge in the UK when completed and crosses a series of lakes and waterways in the Colne Valley with a series of elegant spans and is inspired by a stone skimming over the water.\nVSL UK are constructing the viaduct for the Align JV\, utilising a 700 tonne ‘launching girder’\, the 160m long bridge-building machine is the only one of its kind in the UK and is being used to lift the giant concrete deck segments that form the viaduct’s arches into position.\nThe post tensioned 57 span balanced cantilever viaduct\, comprises 1000 unique segments\, weighing up to 140 tonnes and sits on almost 300 piles.
