SUMMARY:Managing railway noise
DESCRIPTION:Paul Shields\, Senior Lecturer\, (Applied Acoustics)\, University of Derby\nWessex Section hybrid meeting\nSynopsis: The speaker is a senior lecturer of applied acoustics at the University of Derby. This will be an interesting talk providing education\, experiences & advice on how to manage railway noise in an effective and responsible manner. \n*POSTPONED* We are very sorry but due to the planned industrial action on National Rail we have reluctantly taken the decision to cancel this meeting. The Wessex section feels there would not be sufficient people able to attend in person\, something that the speaker and the Wessex Section Committee felt was important. This is also the reason why the section have decided not to offer this presentation as an online only option. Paul Meads wessex@thepwi.org \n

SUMMARY:Management of longitudinal bearers: A practical insight
DESCRIPTION:Greg Humphreys\, Senior Technical Officer and Jake Humphreys\, Team Leader (Longitudinal Timbers)\, Network Rail\nWessex Section hybrid meeting\nSynopsis: It comes as no surprise that Longitudinal Bearer Systems present a challenge to those responsible for their effective management. They have more failure mechanisms than ballasted track and are more difficult to evaluate. There have been too many incidents around the network over the years where management has not been effective.\nWe are fortunate to hear from two very skilled members of the Wessex Route Inner Delivery Unit team who manage these systems on a day-to-day basis. We will hear their practical experience of maintaining\, replacing and upgrading systems. Their efforts have improved safe performance as well as extending asset life. This session will also help us understand how they have developed best practice for detailed examination of the systems. \nMeeting in-person from 15:45 for refreshments courtesy of the PWI for a prompt 16:00 start. \n‘Networx’\, 1 Puddle Dock\, adjacent to Blackfriars Station\, EC4V 3DS \nYou can also join the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams. \nClick here to join the meeting \nMeeting ID: 343 541 610 307\nPasscode: xfm9zm \nDownload Teams | Join on the web \nOr call in (audio only) \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,647380559#   United Kingdom\, London \nPhone Conference ID: 647 380 559# \nIf you are a PWI member and would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio\, you will need to register for the event. SUMMARY:Composite Materials in Track
DESCRIPTION:Embedding sustainability into the railway – Jamie Wilkes\, Technical Authority Team\, Network Rail\nWessex\, Croydon & Brighton sections\nSynopsis: Over the course of the last 6 years\, Network Rail has been progressively introducing sustainable alternatives to wood. Whilst the legislative ban on the use of creosote preservatives was one of the primary drivers\, increased sustainability\, lower environmental impact and circular economy have all been key drivers pushing the industry towards change. So far\, Network Rail has integrated this into the use of longitudinal bearer systems and track sleepers\, with switch and crossing bearers soon to follow (some may already be aware of their use at Newark Flat Crossing). \nThis presentation will discuss the differing types of materials in use\, including their advantages and limitations. The development of the products and the extent of their use so far on Network Rail’s infrastructure will also be considered. The presentation will also discuss the lessons learned in the approval process\, and how we are incorporating the change in material into our existing Standards framework (including maintenance\, inspection\, and replacement requirements)\, to ensure our front-line workers are properly equipped to manage the new materials. \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nOr call in (audio only) \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,898921235#   United Kingdom\, London \nPhone Conference ID: 898 921 235# \nFind a local number | Reset PIN \nLearn More | Meeting options \nIf you are a PWI member and would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio\, you will need to register for the event.
