SUMMARY:Managing low adhesion
DESCRIPTION:Rob Cummings\, Seasonal Performance Improvement Manager\, Northern Trains Ltd\nManchester & Liverpool Section hybrid meeting\nEvery Autumn the UK rail industry suffers from the perennial “Leaves on the line” problem. Train delays and cancellations increase at a time when the passenger numbers tend to be the highest. The media tend to treat this issue as a bit of a joke but it is anything but\, as we have seen with the accidents at Salisbury in 2021 and Tallerdig in 2024. The presentation will explain why low adhesion causes problems for the industry\, what mitigations are currently implemented and what future technologies maybe implemented. \nMeeting in-person from 16:30 for light refreshments for a 17:00 start for all. \n**NEW VENUE** WSP Offices\, 8 First Street\, Manchester\, M15 4RP \nYou can also join the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams. \nJoin the meeting now \nMeeting ID: 328 142 741 134 \nPasscode: dN7m45jT \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,365035701# United Kingdom\, City of London \nFind a local number \nPhone conference ID: 365 035 701# \nIf you are a PWI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Mobile Track Monitoring by passenger trains - RAVE
DESCRIPTION:Jonathon Stelling\, Engineering Project Lead\, Omnicom Balfour Beatty\nManchester & Liverpool Section online meeting\nSince their start in 1998\, Omnicom Balfour Beatty (OBB) has grown to handle the UK’s largest rail data sets and serve most of the major international OEMs. OBB has pushed to digitalise and utilise technology within the rail sector to predict\, prevent and optimise rail assets through measurement systems.\nMobile monitoring of these systems generates a wide range of information not only to the alert of defects but also historical information for trend analysis to aid preventative maintenance. As the requirement for near real-time monitoring increases and the endless insights this information can deliver\, justifies the reason for extending coverage from Network Rails dedicated measurement fleet to passenger vehicles.\nThis presentation focuses on Unattended Track Geometry Measurement Systems (UGMS)\, covering their fitment types on passenger borne vehicles and how data is processed and visualised through their mobile monitoring web application RAVE.\nRAVE currently visualises UGMS data from various Hitachi passenger trains which cover 4 routes: East Coast Mainline\, Great Western\, TransPennine and West of England. The appetite and drive for large amounts of data sets\, brings the challenges of processing\, storing and validating data ready for visualisation. Edge and cloud Artificial Intelligence computing methods overcome these challenges by reducing the amount of data which needs to be transmitted and processed and by removing the need for manual validation of data. \nMicrosoft Teams Need help? \nJoin the meeting now \nMeeting ID: 326 466 376 197 \nPasscode: ZjbCLf \nDial in by phone \n+44 20 3321 5213\,\,722532542# United Kingdom\, City of London \nFind a local number \nPhone conference ID: 722 532 542# \nIf you are a PWI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Visit to the Institute of Railway Research\, Huddersfield University
DESCRIPTION:Visit to the Institute of Railway Research\, Huddersfield University\nManchester & Liverpool Section in person meeting\nThe Manchester & Liverpool  Section Committee are organising a visit to the Institute of Railway Research at Huddersfield University between 14:00-16:00 on Thursday 25 April 2024. \nThe visit will start with a short presentation about areas of work at the IRR which are relevant to track engineers. This will be followed by a one hour tour of the labs which will include: \n\nHarold is a custom-designed adhesion and rolling contact laboratory dynamics rig. It is the only full-size roller rig in the UK and the only one with its capabilities in Europe. It allows railway vehicles to be tested in the laboratory at speeds of up to 225kph\, therefore providing an important National capability for the dynamic characterisation of bogies and for evaluating novel and innovative designs.\nHigh-Speed Pantograph Testing rig which will provide a unique full-scale pantograph dynamic test rig with hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) facility for determination of dynamic interaction forces. Typical applications include the development and assessment of new pantograph designs\, the optimisation of pantograph suspension systems and the development of novel mechatronic solutions.\nTrain Hi-fidelity On-board Motion Simulator (THOMoS) which is a motion platform-based laboratory simulator capable of reproducing the on-board motions and sensations. This will be used to carry out research into passenger comfort and the effect of various novel vehicle design.\n\nMeeting at Huddersfield Station at 13:30 for the relatively short walk to the University. Anyone driving will have to park in city centre car parks (there isn’t parking available at the University) and meet at the University. Trains from both Manchester Victoria and Leeds directions are both due to arrive at Huddersfield at 13:26 (13:00 departure from Manchester Victoria and 12:45 departure from Leeds). \nPlease contact Rob Cummings rob.cummings@northernrailway.co.uk or 07585 994906 if you would like to attend. \n
