In particular full scale operational testing\, particularly in service testing\, for validation and homologation purposes is often costly and difficult to plan and can have significant impact on the network. There is the opportunity to use advanced technologies to reduce the cost and risks involved in early testing and homologation\, but this requires a sound understanding of the impact that using such technologies have on the results dependability and level of accuracy. He now works for Ricardo as a Lead Principal. \nSince the start of 2024\, John has\, as Lead Assessor for both Assessment Body CSM and Approved Body NTSN\, carried out assessments for four station reconstructions that have now each received authority for Entry Into Service from ORR. Amongst his current projects is a new 8 platform terminus (not in UK) \nLondon Section hybrid meeting\nSynopsis: Do you think that lessons can be learnt from the approach elsewhere to station design\, operation\, restoration and location? DESCRIPTION:Mona Sihota\, Technical Head\, Drainage and Lineside\, Network Rail\nLondon Section online meeting\nThis meeting is now online only due to the impending train strikes. \nSynopsis: Since the introduction of diesel and electric trains\, the lineside fire risk created from steam trains has almost disappeared. Whilst initially that was a positive safety consequence\, vegetation and trees continued to grow. Network Rail now faces a 30-year-old weed problem which is affecting the safety and operational performance of the railway. The number of tree incursions per year is showing a general trend of rising. This trend is influenced by more extreme and adverse weather events\, including heat waves. In addition to climate change challenges\, Ash Dieback is spreading throughout the lineside estate with no available cure. Asking our frontline staff to increase their inspections and maintenance of the vegetation and trees is not a realistic or viable solution. We just don’t have enough Off-Track teams to manage the demand. DESCRIPTION:Techs Factor Competition\nLondon Section meeting\nEach year the PWI London Section run the ‘Techs Factor Competition’\, which gives apprentices and young engineers\, (26 years old and under)\, the opportunity to make a short presentation on a railway-related task or project which they have been involved in. Presenters are welcome from across the railway industry\, however individual presentations may be given by a maximum of two people. \nThere is a judging panel and the best presentation is given the Peter Coysten award.
