CODES was developed at the Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) to enable future train/electrification interface testing. Testing affordably in a controlled environment: how far can the industry push the rules? It is a 15-minute walk from both East Acton Station and Willesden Junction Station. \nUnfortunately\, only ten spaces are available\, which will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. DESCRIPTION:David Horton\, Chief Mechanical Engineer\, Great Western Railway\nWest of England Section hybrid meeting\n**PLEASE NOTE THE NEW VENUE** Kevin Morris\, Amey Consulting\, Floor 1\, Station Square\, Gloucester Street\, Swindon\, SN1 1GW \nSynopsis: The GWR Fast Charge Battery Train Trial is a project to test an automated ground-based charging system for battery trains. The system was originally invented by Vivarail Ltd\, who sadly went into administration at the end of 2022\, but with DfT and GWR support the project was revived. \nThe Fast Charging system is located at bay platform 5 at West Ealing station\, where the branch line to Greenford terminates. The train takes charge every time it visits West Ealing station\, to replenish the energy used in the previous round trip. The charging time at West Ealing is approximately 4 minutes\, no more than the normal turnaround time within the existing timetable. Other than a requirement to stop the train in the right place\, the charging system requires no involvement from the driver. \nThe purpose of the trial is to verify the behaviour of the Fast Charging system through all seasons\, to accumulate valuable data and experience about battery life in particular\, and to validate range and performance simulations of the train with ‘real world’ data. \nThe battery train itself is a 3-car variant of the Class 230; also designed and built originally by Vivarail\, converted from former London Underground D78 stock. It was approved for limited demonstration passenger carrying use during the 2-week COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November 2021. DESCRIPTION:Simon Roberts\, Programme Manager\, Network Rail\, Ben Perkins\, Senior Project Manager\, Network Rail and Steve Richardson\, Operations Manager\, Alun Griffiths\nWest of England Section hybrid meeting\nSynopsis: Barmouth Viaduct is an iconic railway structure that spans the Mawddach Estuary\, & is one of the finest and longest timber viaducts in the world. It is Grade II* listed as ‘the only major timber-built viaduct still in use’ in the UK. The existing structure suffered severe corrosion causing loss of section to the majority of elements\, particularly the hog back girder\, and significant widespread paintwork breakdown. The iconic structure consists of two elements: timber (underbridge 40) & metallic (underbridges 41 and 42). The metallic structure consists of five (5) spans. The timber element was renewed in 2022 \nThe scope of the current phase was to deliver a full superstructure replacement of the metallic portion of the structure. The substructure elements were subject to a full capacity and condition led refurbishment & the (redundant) slew mechanism having to remain in-situ as part of the Listed Building conditions. In addition\, the current scope included a full track re-alignment over the metallic spans. This will include a change of system from Longitudinal timbers to direct fastening with an internal guard rail system. The design of the permanent way (delivered by others in the track Alliance SRSA) extend through the tunnel at the North approach & a transitioned onto the timber viaduct. This caused a significant disruption to the network as the route between Didcot and Oxford was shut off.
