And whilst there has been multiple schemes in the past 20 years to reduce the impact of flooding\, the winter of 2023/24 experienced multiple events where the railway was closed\, the longest lasting 8 days in January 2024. Over the past 12 months\, there has been specific resource to make Chipping Sodbury more resilient\, investigating how the railway interacts with the wider river Frome catchment and how each Network Rail asset should perform. DESCRIPTION:Please accept our sincere apologies\, this meeting has been postponed until further notice.\nConstantin Ciobanu\, Associate\, Transportation\, Rail\, South Rail Systems Alliance\, AECOM\nWest of England Section hybrid meeting\nIn 1952\, before British Rail adopted the Virtual Transition as a calculation feature for track design\, a fundamental challenge was raised:\n“The point should not be overlooked that the fortunate passenger in the centre of the coach travelled over a path which was that of the virtual transition\, but the passenger over the bogie was subjected to an instantaneous application and relief of radial acceleration as the bogie passes over the tangent point.”\nConstantin will present and discuss this challenge together with some other fundamental flaws of the principle of Virtual Transition\, still a key calculation method for track alignment design. DESCRIPTION:Old Oak Common\, London\nWest of England Section technical visit\nIn conjunction with the HS2 Stations Team\, the West of England PWI Section is pleased to offer Members a site visit to the Old Oak Common HS2 construction site.\nThe visit is scheduled for Wednesday\, 25 September between 10:00 and 14:00 and will include a presentation on the Old Oak Common project and a site walkthrough. \nBBVS JV Site Office\, Old Oak Common Rail Depot\, London\, NW10 6ED; all visitors are encouraged to use public transport to get to us. It is a 15-minute walk from both East Acton Station and Willesden Junction Station. \nUnfortunately\, only ten spaces are available\, which will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. The system was originally invented by Vivarail Ltd\, who sadly went into administration at the end of 2022\, but with DfT and GWR support the project was revived. \nThe Fast Charging system is located at bay platform 5 at West Ealing station\, where the branch line to Greenford terminates. The train takes charge every time it visits West Ealing station\, to replenish the energy used in the previous round trip. The charging time at West Ealing is approximately 4 minutes\, no more than the normal turnaround time within the existing timetable. Other than a requirement to stop the train in the right place\, the charging system requires no involvement from the driver. \nThe purpose of the trial is to verify the behaviour of the Fast Charging system through all seasons\, to accumulate valuable data and experience about battery life in particular\, and to validate range and performance simulations of the train with ‘real world’ data. \nThe battery train itself is a 3-car variant of the Class 230; also designed and built originally by Vivarail\, converted from former London Underground D78 stock. It was approved for limited demonstration passenger carrying use during the 2-week COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November 2021. It is Grade II* listed as ‘the only major timber-built viaduct still in use’ in the UK. The existing structure suffered severe corrosion causing loss of section to the majority of elements\, particularly the hog back girder\, and significant widespread paintwork breakdown. The iconic structure consists of two elements: timber (underbridge 40) & metallic (underbridges 41 and 42). The metallic structure consists of five (5) spans. The timber element was renewed in 2022 \nThe scope of the current phase was to deliver a full superstructure replacement of the metallic portion of the structure. The substructure elements were subject to a full capacity and condition led refurbishment & the (redundant) slew mechanism having to remain in-situ as part of the Listed Building conditions. In addition\, the current scope included a full track re-alignment over the metallic spans. This will include a change of system from Longitudinal timbers to direct fastening with an internal guard rail system. The design of the permanent way (delivered by others in the track Alliance SRSA) extend through the tunnel at the North approach & a transitioned onto the timber viaduct. DESCRIPTION:Technical Visit to Network Rail’s Electrification (OLE) Training Centre and Training Span in Swindon.\nWest of England Section in person meeting\nSynopsis: The PWI West of England Section is offering PWI members and potential members a unique opportunity to visit Network Rail’s Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) Training Centre and Training Span in Swindon. This  facility offers the ability to see and even handle OLE up close in a safe environment. NR have kindly offered us access to the facility. Your visit will be led by an experienced OLE engineer who will explain some of the key principles of OLE design and construction using real-world examples. \nMeeting place: Outside the front entrance of Swindon Railway Station \nN.B. There is a 10 minute walk to the training centre. Please arrive in good time – if you are late we will be unable to wait for you. \n\nSafety Requirements\n– Full PPE must be worn while on site – steel toecap boots with steel midsole (no rigger boots)\, hard hat\, orange trousers and top\, gloves.\n– No PTS or TVP is required.\n– Full safety briefing will be given on site.\n– Any attendees with mobility problems should contact western@thepwi.org  first before booking\n\nBooking is essential and spaces are strictly limited to 25 people with PWI members being given priority.
