SUMMARY:Derailment and Fire at Summit Tunnel
DESCRIPTION:John Worswick\, Retired Bridge Engineer\nLancaster\, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nOn 20th December 1984 a train of tank wagons carrying petroleum products was derailed in Summit Tunnel\, which is located between Rochdale and Todmorden on the Calder Valley route between Manchester and Leeds. In this presentation John Worswick\, who was called out to the incident and was present as the disaster unfolded\, explains the involvement of the rail staff and emergency services as they assessed the immediate aftermath of the derailment; he also outlines the events which took place\, including an explosion followed by a major fire\, causing the closure of the route to traffic until August 1985. His account includes both contemporary newsreel coverage and also film of the contractor undertaking repair works to the tunnel\, involving relining damaged brick tunnel sections\, securing the tunnel walls with rock bolts and replacing 550 yards of track and sleepers. \nThis is the Christmas social meeting\, which includes a buffet served from 16:00 onwards. It represents a particular opportunity in the section calendar for recently joined members to meet others in a social setting. \nMeeting in person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start. \nEmpire Services Club\nHartington Road\nPreston\nPR1 8PP \nDirections: The club is located by leaving Preston station via the main access road and turning left to walk down Fishergate as far as the second traffic signals junction (Hartington Road) on the right. The premises are located adjacent to the junction (total distance from station 0.4 miles). Limited on-street parking is available on Hartington Road opposite the club. \nIf you are a PWI member please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:The Sorry Saga of Great Musgrave Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Graeme Bickerdike\, Railway Historian\, Writer and Campaigner\nLancaster\, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nThe retrenchment of the British railway network in the 1950s and 1960s left a lasting physical legacy in the form of thousands of disused structures scattered across Britain’s landscape. Most have heritage value as a reminder of our pioneering past\, some have been reclaimed by nature as part of wildlife corridors and many have the potential to be incorporated into future sustainable transport routes. But do asset management regimes in Britain recognise this potential?\nThe controversial burial of a handsome masonry arch bridge in Cumbria – without any engineering justification or engagement with community stakeholders – heaped reputational damage on its custodian\, National Highways\, and prompted the Government to intervene and stop the company’s infilling and demolition programme as engineers\, politicians and active travel campaigners expressed their dismay at its negative social impacts.\nGraeme Bickerdike examines how National Highways got it so wrong and looks at what has changed to ensure there will be no recurrence. SUMMARY:How Dr Beeching saved the railways\, and set the scene for the current rail renaissance
DESCRIPTION:Tim Kendell\, Retired Railway Civil Engineer\nLancaster\, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nSynopsis: Dr Beeching has a reputation for destroying the railway system in Great Britain\, but is it deserved and was his report all bad news? Tim Kendell’s presentation reviews the growth of the railway network from the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 to a network of nearly 18\,000 route miles in 1961. The two world wars took a severe toll on the railways\, and he goes on to review the fitness for purpose of the post-war Modernisation Plan and the associated state of railway finances. Something had to be done and Dr Beeching was chosen to devise the solution. Tim looks at all that was in the report – not just the closures – from the perspective of sixty years on\, and considers what would have happened\, had it not been enacted.\nTim first worked for British Rail in 1972 at the start of the true modernisation. He has seen the resurgence of the railway since that time and has experienced sectorisation\, followed by privatisation and partial renationalisation. He describes how all parts of the railway industry have grown since Beeching\, enabled by his reforms. \nMembers and visitors are warmly invited to attend this Christmas social meeting\, which includes a buffet\, courtesy of The PWI\,  from 16:00 onwards and represents a particular opportunity for recently joined members to meet others in a social setting. \nMeeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start. \nEmpire Services Club\nHartington Road\nPreston\nPR1 8PP \nDirections: The club is located by leaving Preston station via the main access road and turning left to walk down Fishergate as far as the second traffic signals junction (Hartington Road) on the right.
