SUMMARY:Potential Gains Through Climate Change Adaptation on WCML North
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Devan\, Principal Route Engineer (DOT)\, Network Rail\nLancaster\, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nSince 2006 the West Coast Main Line has been closed north of Lancaster for over 100 days due to extreme weather\, costing more than £25 million. This figure would be even higher if the costs to the wider community were included. The situation will only worsen if a holistic approach to weather management is not adopted\, working with partners across the wider catchment area and looking beyond the confines of the railway boundary. By working in this way\, the benefits to both the railway and the wider community can be maximised\, while reducing the total financial investment required by Network Rail. \nThis presentation will outline what collective climate action might look like at key pinch points such as Carlisle and Shap\, focusing on improvements in safety\, reliability\, biodiversity\, and carbon sequestration. \nMeeting in person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start. Light refreshments provided. \nThose attending should assemble at Preston railway station below the Preston Pals War Memorial plaque (adjacent to the subway stairs on Platforms 3 and 4) at 16:15. They will then be accompanied from the Memorial to North Union House to join the meeting. \nIf you are a PWI member please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Development of Train-based Overhead Line Inspections on the West Coast Main Line
DESCRIPTION:Towards RailEI: Proposed Name Change – A short briefing from Past President Steve Whitmore and Chief Executive Stephen Barber on the vision for the future of the PWI and forthcoming ballot of members about a possible name change for the Institution. \nMartin Catterall\, Electrification & Plant Maintenance Engineer and Gareth Kinghorn\, Infrastructure Maintenance Engineer\, Network Rail\nLancaster\, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nThis presentation focuses on the development of an alternative regime to the standard ‘B01’ foot patrol for the basic inspection of OLE equipment on the West Coast Main Line\, which makes significant use of train-borne video recording and also analysis using artificial intelligence. The motivation for this development was the phasing out of foot patrol inspections employing the lookout-operated warning system (LOWS) by Network Rail: this resulted in a need to meet the inspection criteria set out in standards without the availability of significant track access during normal train running\, and the section of WCML between Carnforth and Carlisle\, where LOWS was predominantly employed\, was adopted for the trials. The resulting ‘B01-A’ desktop-based inspection regime is the first of its kind on Network Rail\, and consideration is given to the potential for further improvements to this regime\, such as the use of a dedicated Class 153 inspection vehicle; this would also facilitate the inspection of track bonding. \nThose attending should assemble at Preston railway station below the Preston Pals War Memorial plaque (adjacent to the subway stairs on Platforms 3 and 4) at 15:15\, if attending the first meeting\, or 16:15\, if attending the second. They will then be accompanied from the Memorial to North Union House to join the meeting in each case. \nMeeting in-person from 15:15 for a 15:30 start for those wishing to hear from Stephen Barber and Steve Whitmore. The main presentation will take place from 16:15 for a 16:30 start. \nLight refreshments available before and between meetings. \nIf you are a PWI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:TRU: Huddersfield to Leeds – Delivering on the ground
DESCRIPTION:Stuart Witts\, BAM Nuttall\nLancaster\, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nThe presentation will provide an insight into the ongoing works to deliver major railway infrastructure enhancements on the busy Transpennine rail corridor between Huddersfield and Leeds\, which connects major cities in the North. This section of route will see a huge amount of work over the coming years to deliver additional tracks\, major station upgrades\, line speed increases and the installation of overhead line equipment. After several years in the planning and development phase\, the works are now fully mobilised on site within this section of route. \nThe last twelve month period has been particularly busy on the ground\, with works undertaken to the track\, stations\, bridges and earthworks. In addition a large amount of preparatory work has been undertaken\, such as a programme of works to treat historic mining activity across the route. The specific engineering and operational challenges presented by the Grade I listed station at Huddersfield will be outlined in the presentation\, together with the proposed works. \nMeeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start. Light refreshments available. \nIf you are a PWI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE

SUMMARY:Timetable Planning
DESCRIPTION:Rob Cummings\, Northern Trains and Vice President North West England & North Wales\, PWI\nLancaster\, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nRailways are a guided form of transport\, which can mean that a rail corridor is narrower than an equivalent roadway and can have a high throughput of traffic\, if used efficiently. However the system does not allow overtaking (outside a loop) and requires the controlled separation of traffic moving at different speeds and making conflicting moves at junctions.\nThe timetable provides this control\, but also comprises the railway’s offering to the public who want to use it\, and determines the costs incurred in the form of fleet size\, train mileage (fuel and maintenance) and train crew requirements. In this presentation Rob Cummings\, Seasonal Performance Improvement Manager\, will describe the process of timetable planning and explain the conflicts in space and resource that have to be resolved in order for a timetable to be created. \nMeeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start. Light refreshments available. \nIf you are a PWI member\, please book your space if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your CPD portfolio. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE
