SUMMARY:Evolution of the Grand Trunk Route between Preston and Carlisle
DESCRIPTION:Philip Benzie\, MPWI\nLancaster\, Barrow & Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nSynopsis: In the fiftieth year since completion of West Coast Main Line electrification in 1974\, this presentation traces the construction and subsequent role of the section of route\nbetween Preston and Carlisle in railway communication between London and Scotland. This includes an examination of the alternative route alignments which were proposed between Lancaster and Carlisle before the route chosen was constructed and opened in December 1846\, and how the physical characteristics of the route\, including the presence of Shap Summit\, have influenced its operation. \nNetwork development during the London & North Western Railway era added branch lines\, and the character of passenger and freight services which developed through to the LMS and British Rail eras is also covered. The electrification of the line at 25kV AC\, which was approved in 1970\, involved significant civil engineering works along the route\, and the changes in levels of service for passengers and freight following its completion are highlighted. \nMeeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start \nIf you are a PWI member please login before registering if would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio. SUMMARY:Petteril Bridge derailment - reactive recovery works
DESCRIPTION:Mark Evans\, Senior Programme Manager – Civils\, Network Rail\nLancaster\, Barrow & Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nSynopsis: At 20:03 on 19th October 2022 the 17:15 Clitheroe to Carlisle Yard freight service derailed at Petteril Bridge Junction to the east of Carlisle railway station\, where the lines from Newcastle and Settle converge. The freight train involved was formed of a Class 66 locomotive and 14 loaded cement wagons\, and five of these wagons derailed. One of the derailed wagons subsequently entered the River Petteril. The derailment caused significant damage to an underbridge structure\, which required emergency works to allow the line to reopen to traffic. In this presentation Mark Evans\, Senior Programme Manager (Civils)\, will cover the site constraints and key challenges involved in restoring the line to traffic\, the reactive recovery operation by Network Rail’s internal delivery team and the additional works undertaken to structures and geotechnical assets facilitated by the temporary suspension of services. \nMeeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start \nIf you are a PWI member and would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio\, you will need to register for the event. SUMMARY:Introduction to trackbed stabilisation and reinforced soil structures
DESCRIPTION:Peter Matthias\, Rail Lead\, Tensar International Ltd\nLancaster\, Barrow & Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nSynopsis: Tensar is a verified supplier and designer under the Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS)\, which has enabled direct client engagement on HS2\, Network Rail and Transport for London projects. This presentation will demonstrate how Tensar product technology is being applied both to enabling and main works on major rail infrastructure schemes to provide value to the client through reductions in cost\, time\, and carbon. There will be a dual focus on Tensar stabilisation products incorporated within the rail trackbed build-up\, and on reinforced soil structures relating to walls and slopes in a rail context. \nMeeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start \nIf you are a PWI member and would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio\, you will need to register for the event. SUMMARY:Introduction to the electric traction system
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dearman\, PWI President and Independent Consultant\nLancaster\, Barrow & Carlisle Section in-person meeting\nSynopsis: Peter Dearman has held senior roles in the railway industry in the field of traction electrification\, and was responsible for defining the engineering framework and strategic development of the 2009 UK Network Electrification Programme. As a preamble to his presentation he will explain the strategic goals of his term as PWI President.\nPeter’s presentation explains the functioning of the main electrical and mechanical components of overhead (OLE) electrification practice in the UK. The provision of electricity supply includes the process through which power is taken from the national grid and supplied at reduced voltage to the railway via regularly spaced feeder stations\, involving the adoption of appropriate earthing and bonding arrangements for OLE masts and other structures and the provision of neutral sections in order to keep geographically distinct feeder sources separate. Mechanical considerations include the erection of masts to support catenary wires\, which consist in practice of a succession of ‘tension lengths’ with overlaps and appropriate tensioning arrangements. Variations in practice are employed in order to accommodate turnouts and crossovers. \nMeeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start \nIf you are a PWI member and would like this event to be automatically recorded in your PWI CPD portfolio\, you will need to register for the event. SUMMARY:The Track Materials Supply Chain
DESCRIPTION:Peter Heubeck\, Consultant\nLancaster\, Barrow & Carlisle Section meeting\nMeeting from 16:00 for a 16:30 start \nSynopsis: Peter Heubeck played a leading role in organising the supply of permanent way materials during his service with Railtrack and Network Rail\, which included modernising the provision of engineering trains so that they operated in a centralised manner. In this presentation he considers the factors affecting the supply of each commodity – ballast\, rail\, sleepers and S & C – in turn\, and looks at the benefits of centralisation\, reviewing the problems encountered in doing so. The supply of materials for the HS2 project is included\, as also observations on how the supply chain serves the local area of Lancashire and Cumbria. \nBOOK YOUR SPACE HERE
