In particular full scale operational testing\, particularly in service testing\, for validation and homologation purposes is often costly and difficult to plan and can have significant impact on the network. DESCRIPTION:John Dolan\, Lead Principal\, Ricardo and FPWI\nJohn is an infrastructure\, operations and safety specialist\, who started as a student trainee with British Rail and who has subsequently held various maintenance management and consultancy positions. He now works for Ricardo as a Lead Principal. \nSince the start of 2024\, John has\, as Lead Assessor for both Assessment Body CSM and Approved Body NTSN\, carried out assessments for four station reconstructions that have now each received authority for Entry Into Service from ORR. Amongst his current projects is a new 8 platform terminus (not in UK) \nLondon Section hybrid meeting\nSynopsis: Do you think that lessons can be learnt from the approach elsewhere to station design\, operation\, restoration and location? This is your chance to debate this important matter\, using US examples as prompts. \nParticipants will be actively encouraged to participate throughout and\, therefore\, attendance in person is very much welcomed. DESCRIPTION:Techs Factor Competition\nLondon Section meeting\nEach year the PWI London Section run the ‘Techs Factor Competition’\, which gives apprentices and young engineers\, (26 years old and under)\, the opportunity to make a short presentation on a railway-related task or project which they have been involved in. Presenters are welcome from across the railway industry\, however individual presentations may be given by a maximum of two people. \nThere is a judging panel and the best presentation is given the Peter Coysten award. DESCRIPTION:John Dolan\, PWI Fellow\nLondon Section meeting\nSynopsis: Electrification\, particularly overhead electrification at high voltage\, is generally seen in a positive way. Typical benefits claimed include the simplification (and thus reduction of cost) of rail vehicles\, the local elimination of pollution\, especially if the alternative is a diesel powered vehicle\, and a cleaner image. However\, there are wider cost and external effects.
