Overview
The Weardale Railway is an 18 mile heritage line which runs from a connection with the main railway network at Bishop Auckland in County Durham to Eastgate in the Weardale Area of Outstanding Beauty. At the moment a 16 mile section between Stanhope and Bishop Auckland has been restored for passenger and freight use.

History
The Weardale Railway was part of a line which originally ran from Bishop Auckland, following the River Wear westwards to the village of Wearhead – a distance of 25 miles. The line was started as an offshoot of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1847 to transport material to the ironworks of Teesside, and by 1895 it had been extended along the dale as far as Wearhead.
