Volunteering with RailEI

Our Committees play a pivotal role in guiding RailEI activities and policies. We actively encourage members from diverse backgrounds to apply, ensuring that a wide range of perspectives inform our decisions.

Our Current Committees:

• Audit Committee: Internal audit to demonstrate and confirm conformity with our requirements for professional registration and technical education
• Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) Committee
• Environmental Sustainability Committee
• Ethical Standards Committee: Advises on matters relating to standards of professional conduct and ethical behaviour within the context of the management and engineering of railways.
• Joint Board of Moderators: Accredits and approves programmes of learning relevant to the built environment, as a member body alongside ICE, IStructE, IHE and CIHT.
• External working groups: We are often approached to support others within engineering in their work. This could be NEPC, NSAR, IfATE, Industrial Advisory Boards at universities to name a few.

Joining a Committee

As a committee member, you will be instrumental in shaping RailEI policies, overseeing processes, and contributing to the Institution’s growth. Your involvement ensures that RailEI continues to meet the needs of its members and the wider industry, and gives a voice to the railway in a wider context

Supporting your local Section is an excellent way to get involved and connect with fellow railway engineers / enthusiasts in your area. Each Section is managed by dedicated volunteers who organise meetings, events, and other activities to support the local railway engineering community.

Volunteer Roles:

• Section Committee Member: Help plan and execute Section events and initiatives.
• Vice President: Assist in leading the Section and coordinating activities.
• Section Secretary: Help plan and execute Section events and initiatives.

Our Professional Registration processes rely on the dedication of volunteers who take on a variety of critical roles in conferring the EngTech, IEng and CEng titles. If you are passionate about supporting the next generation of engineers and professionalising the industry, consider becoming involved in this essential area.

Key Volunteer Roles:

• Professional Registration Reviewer: Trained to peer-assess candidates for professional review as desk-top activity, and through interview.
• Professional Registration Assessor: Trained to review submissions from candidates who are using a route to registration to fill an academic gap through Technical Report or Experiential Learning.
• Sponsor: Every applicant needs a Sponsor who knows their area of work, not necessarily the individual. They quality assure the application and, having done so, recommend the individual for election.
• Membership Committee: The over-arching committee responsible for the consideration and decision of all registration application matters.
• Academic Panel Member: Responsible for upholding the academic standards of the professional registration process.
• Professional Development Committee: Responsible for providing public confidence that all RailEI professionally registered members maintain their competence through continuing professional development.

Support our marketing efforts by contributing relevant content and helping to amplify our campaigns.

Ways to Contribute:

• Content Creation: Write blog posts, share project updates, or provide testimonials that can be featured on RailEI platforms.
• Photography: Submit high-quality images from your projects or RailEI events for use in our publications and online content.

Who Can Be a Content Creator? Anyone with a passion for storytelling, whether through words or images.

Time Commitment: The level of involvement is up to you – contribute as much or as little as your schedule allows.

Our Ambassadors represent RailEI at industry events and within their professional networks, helping to promote our mission and engage with the wider railway engineering community.

Key Roles:

• Present at a Seminar: Engage a wider audience by delivering a presentation at one of our seminars.
• Inspire the Next Generation: Speak at schools and careers fairs to encourage young people to consider a career in railway engineering.
• Volunteer for RailEI: Support the Institution through by attending various industry events to strengthen our presence and impact.
