About RailEI

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

People matter

Diversity comes in many different forms, including gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic background. These factors contribute to not only an individual’s unique personal experiences in life, but also their professional experiences. Diversity in the rail industry is important in applying the fullest range of knowledge and experience to improve engineering practices and solve problems, and RailEI is committed to supporting all those working within our community and beyond. This means raising awareness of diversity and inclusion, collecting data to can monitor and improve the bigger picture, and providing a platform to share and amplify the voices of engineers belonging to underrepresented groups.

“Workforce diversity is improving in large industries like rail, but there is still so much more we can do.”

Driving change

ED&I Committee

Chaired by RailEI President Chrisma Jain, the Committee will identify issues, gather and evaluate information, and recommend courses of action to better integrate diversity and inclusion within the culture of the Institution. A priority for the Committee is to strengthen RailEI’s plans in line with its ED&I Policy to promote equality so that we play our full part in enacting positive change within our community and across the wider industry.

Help Us Better Understand Our Community

Measuring equity, diversity and inclusion is crucial to effecting positive change across the engineering sector. We would encourage everyone in our community to update their ED&I information in their portal. This can be done by logging in and updating your details.

We collect this information to better understand our community’s needs, improve our inclusivity and report against ED&I statistics within the wider engineering community. Providing data is completely optional and will be anonymised. It is processed in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, and is used solely for research and reporting purposes.

What are we doing?

Our progress

At RailEI, we care about the individuals who make up our community, and we want that community to feel like a safe and inclusive, non-judgemental space for all. We are on a journey of transformation and as such, have adopted and committed to the following:

Diversity Framework

We will monitor our progress using the Royal Academy of Engineers' Progression Framework for Professional Engineering Institutions.

Diverse Panels Pledge

Along with other PEIs we have signed up to the pledge to ensure diverse representation at our conferences, seminars, and events.

Engaging young engineers

Our Institution has made significant progress building relationships with and providing opportunities for enthusiastic early career engineers.

Unconscious bias training

Undertaking this training will allow every Member of our community to recognise and limit any hidden biases within our Institution.
Diversity and inclusion is one of RailEI's topmost priorities and I am excited to see how our community evolves going forward.”

We are proud to support women in engineering through our partnership with the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), helping to promote inclusion, representation and opportunities across the industry.
