Increase your potential
RailEI Membership embeds individuals in a community of knowledge sharing, thought leadership and opportunity all in relation to railway engineering. For those who have a professional or personal interest in the railways, the RailEI is your community. Membership benefits have been designed to help you increase your potential and get the most of your rail career, which is why we have so many lifelong members. Joining our Professional Engineering Institution gives you access to not only professional growth, but to a way of life.
Who is eligible to join?
- We are an open institution, which means we welcome members with all types of professional or personal interest in the railways.
- If you work in rail and/or engineering, great! If not but you simply have an interest in rail and feel that our community can benefit you, you are still absolutely welcome to join us.
Who are our typical members?
- From professional engineers and railway workers to train enthusiasts and business friends, our membership base is very broad. The one quality that unites them is an interest in railway engineering.
- Outside the UK? You are still welcome! While we are a predominantly UK based Institution, we do operate internationally and have a large number of international members, and we are always expanding.
What if you're a student or apprentice?
- You can join for free! Membership is not restricted to those with a certain level of knowledge and experience. We particularly welcome those who are embarking on their career and hope we will be with you for many years to come.
What if you are retired from the industry?
- You are still very welcome and we actively encourage retired individuals to join us as they play a vital role in imparting knowledge and experience into our community. We even apply membership concessions for individuals over a certain age. Please see our membership rates below.

Questions and answers
If you are aged 18 or over, you can become a member of RailEI. Choose from the following options:
- Member – an individual membership for anyone aged 18 years or over. If you fall into our reduced rate category, please contact our Membership Team at secretary@railei.org who will apply this for you.
- Student – an individual membership for anyone aged 18 years or over who is in full-time or part-time UK based education leading to a formal qualification. Student members will receive a soft copy of our Journal or can choose to pay a small annual amount to receive a hard copy.
- Apprentice – an individual membership for anyone aged 18 years or over who is in an approved UK apprentice scheme leading to a formal qualification. Apprentice members will receive a soft copy of our Journal or can choose to pay a small annual amount to receive a hard copy.
You can pay for your membership online by Direct Debit or card, by telephone or by bank transfer.
- Direct Debit – take the hassle out of renewal and set up a Direct Debit and we’ll collect your subscription automatically. Paying this way helps ensure that every pound possible is spent on improving and expanding our services to our members. If you pay by Direct Debit, the full membership payment will be debited from your account once a year, and as soon as payment is received we will send you a receipt
- Card – login and pay through the website or give us a call on +44 (0) 300 373 6000 opt 1. If you pay online, you now have the option of setting up a monthly subscription. As soon as your payment is received, we will send you a receipt.

Unfortunately, we do not allow young people under 18 years old to become members of RailEI.
Yes. Due to the different career paths of our members, our reduced rate membership is determined by age. Any member who is 68 or older is entitled to the reduced rate and when a member reaches 80 years, they are entitled to free membership. Contact our Membership Team at secretary@railei.org or 0300 373 6000 for these rates to apply.
Yes absolutely! People living outside the UK can join as a Member. Membership certificates and Journals will be despatched as normal but delivery times will vary depending upon the destination.
Yes absolutely. Login to your member portal to update your preference, or drop us an email at secretary@railei.org and we will email you a link to our e-Journal every quarter. You can switch back to receiving hard copies at any time.
Your membership number can be found in your membership portal on the website. Just log in to the website and go to your account details.

You can update your contact details (address, email, mobile and telephone numbers) and how you hear from us by logging in to the website and updating your details in your account. If you need to change your name or primary email address, please contact us on +44 (0) 300 373 6000 or email secretary@railei.org.

All the details of your membership can be found in your account under My Membership. Simply login using your primary email address and password and you will be able to see when your membership is due for renewal, as well as being able to update your contact details and preferences.

You will receive a PDF receipt via email within 5 days of your payment. Receipts are available to download from your online account. If you need a receipt for an earlier transaction please contact our Membership Team at secretary@railei.org and we will send this to you.
All users must register for a new online access when logging in for the first time. Click ‘Sign up now’ and use your primary email address to register. Please email secretary@railei.org if you do not know which email address to use.
