Overview
The Watercress Line is a heritage railway running on approximately 10 miles of track between the towns of Alton and Alresford. It is operated by Mid-Hants Railway Ltd on behalf of the Watercress Line Heritage Railway Trust, a registered charity. The line’s name derives from the shipment of watercress forming a large part of the former goods traffic between Alresford and London.

More than just a railway
The Railway is single line working with passing loops at Medstead and Four Marks and Ropley where the locomotive works are located. Steam locomotives are the predominant source of motive power, reinforced with a fleet of diesel electric locomotives. The majority of the trackwork is 95lb bull head rail on concrete sleepers with a few short sections of 98lb / 109lb flat bottom rail on concrete sleepers with RNB6 fastenings and 113lb flat bottom rail with SHC fastenings.
