Introduction to Light Rail
Light rail is a general term that includes a wide range of different technologies from segregated automatic metro systems to tramways operating in street environments to tram-train vehicles operating alongside conventional “heavy rail” vehicles. An overview of the different forms of light rail will be provided that includes infrastructure, vehicles and methods of operation. The benefits and challenges of light rail will be considered along with the outlook for light rail in the UK and Ireland summarising planned future extensions and new systems. (40 mins)

Part 2: Edwin Barker, Technical Director, AECOM

International Developments in Light Rail
Light rail systems operate in diverse contexts worldwide. This discussion will explore various examples to illustrate how their characteristics integrate into the broader transport mix, while also examining historic trends in global light rail development. (20 mins)
