Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I have been working in track maintenance for Network Rail for 17 years and have recently been appointed Assistant Track Maintenance Engineer for Swansea MDU, South Wales. I began my journey as an apprentice with Network Rail in 2008, developing my engineering skills, knowledge and experience working within the Technical Department for track maintenance. I am currently studying an Integrated Level 6 degree in Rail & Rail Systems Engineering at London South Bank University, working toward my academic goals and professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer. 

Why did you want to become professionally registered? 

Professional registration is important to me. It shows that I am committed to continuous development and improvement, and it gives me credibility as an Engineer. It’s about getting recognition for my achievements and showing my dedication to my profession and the community I serve. 

I am currently working toward registration as an Incorporated Engineer, and EngTech was a key part in working toward this goal. The Engineering Technician application process was instrumental in helping me understand the current level of Engineering ability and knowledge that I hold, and to identify the steps I need to take to develop myself further. Professional Registration helps me stay informed with current practices and developments within the industry which is essential for any aspiring Engineer. 

How did you find the process? 

I found the process quite enjoyable. With guidance and support from other registered Engineers, I was able to navigate the application process with ease. I successfully completed my application over the course of three months and submitted in December 2024.   

How do you consider being recognised with EngTech status as helping you in your career? 

It gives my employer confidence in my ability as a registered Engineering Technician, that I am committed to the professional code of conduct and that I will carry out my duties in the best interest of the business and community I work for. It evidences my commitment to my development and my desire to succeed and perform at the highest level. Professional Registration provides me access to the wider Engineering community allowing me to network with other experts within my field: this is a huge benefit and will really help in my journey toward Incorporated status.
