Barmouth Viaduct Reconstruction

Cheshire & North Wales Section hybrid meeting
Synopsis: Barmouth Viaduct is an iconic railway structure that spans the Mawddach Estuary, & is one of the finest and longest timber viaducts in the world. It is Grade II* listed as ‘the only major timber-built viaduct still in use’ in the UK. The existing structure suffered severe corrosion causing loss of section to the majority of elements, particularly the hog back girder, and significant widespread paintwork breakdown. The iconic structure consists of two elements: timber (underbridge 40) & metallic (underbridges 41 and 42). The metallic structure consists of five (5) spans. The timber element was renewed in 2022
The scope of the current phase was to deliver a full superstructure replacement of the metallic portion of the structure. The substructure elements were subject to a full capacity and condition led refurbishment & the (redundant) slew mechanism having to remain in-situ as part of the Listed Building conditions. In addition, the current scope included a full track re-alignment over the metallic spans. This will include a change of system from Longitudinal timbers to direct fastening with an internal guard rail system. The design of the permanent way (delivered by others in the track Alliance SRSA) extend through the tunnel at the North approach & a transitioned onto the timber viaduct. The scheme is also replaced the integral Marine Navigation lighting with a like for like modern equivalent.
