Developments in railway earthworks management

Synopsis: Network Rail is rightly expected to set a high standard in the management of its infrastructure, and the regulatory demands are becoming ever tighter. Maintaining the performance of railway earthworks, which were built to cost by manual labour more than a century ago, poses a significant challenge to today’s asset engineers. In this presentation Julian Harms, Principal Engineer (Geotechnics) at Network Rail Technical Authority, explores some of the innovations which are being considered to manage safe performance against the backdrop of higher customer expectations, extreme weather and an asset base well beyond its design life. Following the presentation there will be an opportunity to view a film which follows the process of repairing a landslip on the Settle and Carlisle line in 1988.
