Fibre Optic Movement Sensing – an emerging tool for large scale rail system condition monitoring
July 21 @ 12:30 - 13:30

Ed Austin, Managing Director, Focus Sensors Ltd
RailEI Lunch & Learn
Fibre Optic Movement Sensing (FOMS) technology can use the existing trackside optical fibre cable to detect small and gradual movement of the cable route resulting from changes in the track formation, structures and earthworks. This session will describe how FOMS works and present supporting evidence gained from long term FOMS installations demonstrating early identification of cost-effective maintenance strategies including:
The detection of subsidence 6 months ahead of detection by train borne measurement
Optimised maintenance activity for point machines subject to track movements
