West of England Section hybrid meeting
Elliot Passmore, BEng (Hons) IEng MICE, MRailEI, Engineer, AECOM and Mark Howells, BEng (Hons) IEng MRailEI, Senior Asset Engineer (Drainage), Network Rail will provide a summary of the design, review, construction and handback processes they followed to enable a new track drainage system on the Filton West Curve, Bristol to be installed which is a key enabler of the Metro West phase 2 scheme which will see the introduction of passenger services to a freight only line to Brabazon and eventually Henbury.
The talk will describe how compliance to NR/L2/CIV/005, Module 9, Issue 2 was achieved, with insights and reflections provided from both the perspective of the designer and client and how collaboration was key to providing an optimal solution which delivered on the project outcomes.
Construction considerations will be described including the proactive decisions made to minimise site fabrication, increasing production rates whilst decreasing risk to the installation teams. A view from the client organisation will also be provided, focussing on record keeping including asset register updates and the handback walkout following successful delivery of the work ahead of schedule in July 2026.
The scheme was a joint and collaborative effort by AECOM as the scheme designer, Colas Rail as the principal contractor and Network Rail as the client for the scheme with funding provided by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
