Meeting the challenge of Railhead Adhesion

23/01/2024 @ 12:30 - 13:30

Julian Swan, Chief Executive Office, Plasmatrack and Jess Logan, Plasmatrack

PWI Lunch & Learn

Synopsis: PlasmaTrack Leaves on the Line Track Sensor Railways tackles the costly issue of leaves on tracks during Autumn. It is an innovative technology to measure, analyze and predict railway conditions enabling pre-emptive mitigation and stop ‘Leaves on the line’ delays.

PlasmaTrack uncovered this novel sensing technology during the development of its plasma track cleaning technology sponsored by the RSSB Predictable & Optimised Braking programme. PlasmaTrack used a RAMAN sensor to analyse the ‘leaf layer’ and help understand the effects of high energy plasma on contaminated track. It has now embarked on a Department for Transport Funded First of a Kind (FOAK) project to develop technology from a scientific laboratory system into a Railway Ready demonstrator suitable for deployment by Network Rail.

3 Months into the 12-month programme we will introduce the technology, the programme and report on initial findings.
