Probabilistic Gauging

Probabilistic Gauging was first proposed 21 years ago as an engineering method of assessing and managing gauging risk using techniques developed by NASA for the US space programme in the 1950’s and 60’s. Rather than assuming that everything will ‘go wrong’ at the same time (as we tend to do in rail) probabilistic analysis looks at the likelihood of events occurring together and allows us to consider the level of risk we find acceptable. In gauging, our current methodology carries less risk than that of the world ending today, and by moving to a more pragmatic level of risk, aligned with the overall system risk of the railway, we can manage space better to reduce maintenance, upgrade, and electrification costs. With the imminent release of a Railway Industry Standard, David Johnson (the engineer responsible for developing the technique for rail) will explain how Probabilistic Gauging calculations are done and how these can be applied to day-to-day railway operations to enable us to start using the technique in earnest.
