The South Wales Metro – a historical perspective

Synopsis: Since its formal launch in November 2015 , work has been progressing on the South Wales Metro, an integrated heavy rail, light rail and bus-based public transport system based around the hub of Cardiff central station. Work on the ground began in 2020 and continues at pace, with the construction of the £100 million Metro Depot and Control Centre at Taffs Well nearing completion. This facility will be home to 36 Metro tram trains and over 400 members of staff and support services on the core Valleys Lines.
However, many of the ideas and concepts behind the Metro are not new. At the start of the 20th Century, the independent railway companies of South Wales were wrestling with the problems of slow services, insufficient capacity and the need to attract new business to compete with a new technology – the electric tramway. With the Taff Vale Railway taking a leading role in developing new concepts and services, a precursor to the Metro concept swiftly developed . This presentation explores the development of railmotor services and the first attempts to develop a cost-effective and popular suburban rail network in South Wales.
