Thames Valley Section meeting
This meeting can be joined either virtually or in-person.
Meeting in-person from 17:00 for a 17:45 start for all.
Synopsis: Flooding of the River Exe at Cowley Bridge on the northern outskirts of Exeter has caused disruption to the railways ever since their construction in the 1840s. This presentation traces the original watercourses in the flood plain at Cowley, how they have been altered during the past 180 years, and the consequential effects on the railways, particularly at Cowley Bridge Junction. Also described are measures taken at different times to mitigate problems resulting from floods, and their relative success to date.
