Satellites & soil moisture: Advances in asset resilience in the face of climate change

Synopsis: Earth Observation – using satellites for remote sensing – can be applied to detect and map sub surface soil moisture which can be an important consideration in geotechnical assets such as railways cuttings and embankments. These earthwork assets are known to deteriorate over time and can fail, due for example to drainage maintenance issues. When climate change effects are introduced into the asset modelling the deterioration is markedly accelerated – emphasizing the need for better modelling and planning ahead of both maintenance and mitigations especially when budget constraints demand that more is to be done with less. This session will review the growing geotechnical challenges with regards to soil moisture, and introduce the use of remote sensing techniques to provide tools to meet the challenge for our critical national infrastructure, such as rail networks, where intelligent infrastructure management is required at scale.
