South & West Wales Section hybrid meeting
Mark Chestney will be explaining the background, purpose and function of the Visual Inspection Units. These former Class 153 single car units have been converted into high-tech mobile track monitoring trains to inspect and record the condition of switches and crossings in areas with limited or difficult access.
He will also discuss the background to this project and the challenges the team faced during a very short timescale to design and build a vehicle to meet all the requirements. After a trial period with the first vehicle, further units were converted to reduce the need for basic visual inspections on foot and thereby reduce the risk to personnel on the ground.
