The Construction and Maintenance of Private Sidings
11/11/2025 @ 16:30 - 18:00

Jamie Kelly, Programme Manager, Metro & Rail Projects, VolkerRail Ltd
Lancaster, Barrow and Carlisle Section in-person meeting
VolkerRail has existed since 2009 as a leading railway infrastructure contractor for both new line construction and the updating of existing railway infrastructure, having evolved from Grant Lyon & Co. in the early 1950s. The presentation highlights the firm’s involvement in sidings construction projects for both private and public sector clients, focusing on the recently completed reinstatement and reconnection of Horton-in-Ribblesdale Quarry siding on the Settle and Carlisle line for Heidelberg Materials. This has included both permanent way and signalling upgrade works, allowing aggregates to be supplied once again by rail to major construction projects.
VolkerRail also has significant involvement nationally in the maintenance of siding layouts. Maintenance regimes for the private sidings layouts at Sellafield and BAE Systems in Barrow are featured, together with regimes at layouts with special characteristics such as the British Steel Scunthorpe very heavy rail system, where permanent way is exposed to exceptionally heavy loads.
Meeting in-person from 16:00 for a 16:30 start. Light refreshments available.
