The Development of PWI Policy on Climate Change

12/04/2022 @ 16:00 - 18:00

Joan Heery, PWI Past President and Membership Director and John Parker, Railway Civil Engineer

Lancaster, Barrow and Carlisle Section meeting

Meeting from 16:00 for a 16:30 start.

The Development of PWI Policy on Climate Change

In Autumn 2020 the PWI resolved to establish an Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Decarbonisation as a source of expert advice.  As Chair of the Committee, Joan Heery will explain its role in advising PWI members on policies relating to climate change and liaising externally through the National Engineering Policy Centre in order to contribute to the collective advice of 43 engineering institutions to policy makers.

As a key Committee member the particular policies of Network Rail on climate change and decarbonisation, which are embodied in its 2020-2050 Environmental and Sustainability Strategy, will be highlighted.  There will also be reference to the PWI’s alignment with the UK Government on its future transport decarbonisation policy.

Climate Change and Local Sea Defences

John Parker will revisit aspects of his presentation in Whitehaven in April 2017 (Sea Defences:  Friend or Foe?), in particular the case studies relating to failures and repairs along the Cumbrian Coast. The maintenance of sea defences will be an increasing challenge in the years ahead with rising sea levels as a result of climate change. The intention of this review is to provoke discussion of concerns and possible solutions.
