Track buckling resistance and the maintainer – How did we get where we are today?

Synopsis: In this technical presentation Andy Franklin, Principal Project Engineer (Track and Lineside), reviews both some theory of track buckling resistance and also lessons learned. The focus is on buckles of continuous welded rail (CWR), but with recognition that many issues are common to both CWR and jointed track.
Andy begins by looking at the underlying principles of how track resists buckling, and continues by exploring some learning from past track buckles, together with how these lessons have influenced the standards and procedures which we use today. He goes on to consider some common threads in the causes of track buckling.
