Trilink: The intelligent renewal of West Coast Main Line North

‘We’re only replacing a set of points…’ This presentation will detail the development of the Trilink programme from problem statement through to the specific allocation of funds as part of Network Rail’s control period funding award. Through the programme assets on the West Coast Main Line between Weaver Junction and Carlisle will be renewed ‘intelligently’ using a pragmatic (as opposed to like-for-like) approach, resulting in better functionality with fewer assets by placing them in the optimum location. Account will be taken of notable changes in the nature of WCML operation since 1974, in particular the abolition of locomotive-hauled passenger trains and increased length of freight trains. The scope of the renewals fundamentally covers track, signalling and telecommunications (adoption of European Train Control System (ECTS)) and overhead line electrification assets.
The development work has involved the consultation of network customers and a collaborative cross-industry approach; some unexpected elements have emerged in areas which would not have been identified through a single discipline approach. One potential option under consideration is the provision of a loop at Carnforth via the operational platforms, which would allow through WCML services to call. The generation of infrastructure options through ‘intelligent renewals’ thinking in relation to the Carlisle area will also be demonstrated, including an invitation to the audience to participate and discuss.
