PWI Electrification Engineering Diploma Testimonial 

I started my railway career in 2008, working my way up the supply chain ladder, from a humble operative to a team leader and supervisor. In 2016, I joined Network Rail as a Technical Draughtsperson in Ashford, where I honed my skills in electrical diagrams for Kent. This was followed by a move to the Southern region asset strategy team as an Asset Engineer.

A brief secondment as a Project Engineer and a subsequent promotion to Senior Asset Engineer led me to the Anglia route, where I gained valuable experience in OLE systems and contributed significantly to Control Period 7 planning.

The Role of Further Education

Network Rail’s support to pursue my Master’s degree in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration at the University of Birmingham has been a game-changer. Coupled with a Level 7 apprenticeship, this academic pursuit is propelling me towards chartered status.

Throughout my educational journey, PWI courses have been instrumental. The Electrification Engineering Diploma, in particular, has been invaluable. It filled the gaps in my knowledge, especially as I transitioned from DC to OLE. The residential modules provided hands-on learning opportunities, solidifying theoretical concepts.

Beyond the Classroom

My involvement with the PWI extends beyond the classroom. Participating in the Electrification Challenge was an incredible experience. The practical application of theoretical knowledge, from assembling cantilevers to installing contact wires, boosted my confidence.

Attending PWI seminars, such as those focused on DC systems, has been crucial for maintaining and refreshing my skills. The networking opportunities offered by these events have opened doors to new connections and career avenues.
