Overview

Opened in 1869 by the Midland Railway as a route between the Midlands and the South Coast the Avon Valley Railway was later linked to the iconic Somerset & Dorset Railway. Closed under the Beeching Axe of the 1960’s the line was preserved by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Today, 40 years on, three miles of track has been re-laid, locomotives and carriages restored, and the sound of steam can once again be heard along the Avon Valley.

We are essentially a volunteer-run organisation with support from a limited paid staff. Around 150 active volunteers maintain and restore our locomotives and carriages in our workshops. They also operate our trains as drivers, guards and ticket inspectors.

We run trains 130 days a year during the summer plus our Santa Specials. Our station Buffet is also open daily (except Christmas Day) throughout the year and has an excellent local reputation for the quality of its meals.

We’ve joined the Permanent Way Institution to help us improve our competence at managing our track and associated infrastructure, benefitting from the professional advice and support it can offer.
