Overview

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is a heritage railway based at Toddington and Winchcombe in the beautiful county of Gloucestershire. The GWR operates steam and diesel trains between Cheltenham Racecourse in the south and Broadway to the north, giving a total mainline mileage of approximately 15 miles through the beautifully stunning Cotswold countryside with views stretching for miles (on a good day!) over towards the Malvern hills. The railway is predominantly single line, with passing loops at Gotherington, Winchcombe and Toddington. At the present time, four signal boxes operate the route (Broadway signalbox should be in operation soon) and trains operates under the electric key token system.

The track work is comprised of both bullhead and flat bottom, with the majority of this being either 95lb bullhead on timber sleepers or 113A flat bottom on SHC or Pandrol-clipped concrete sleepers. One section of flat bottom rail near Bishops Cleeve is continuously welded and the majority of the line north of Toddington to Broadway is also continuously welded. In the middle of the line, there is an impressive 693 yard long tunnel – the second longest tunnel on a preserved railway in the UK.
