Overview
The Wensleydale Railway is a volunteer-led heritage railway operating over 22 miles of the former Northallerton to Garsdale route in North Yorkshire. The line is operated by the Wensleydale Railway plc, supported by the Wensleydale Railway Trust Ltd, a registered charity. The railway connects to the East Coast Main Line at Northallerton and serves the towns of Bedale and Leyburn, terminating in the village of Redmire.

Variety of visitor activities
The Wensleydale Railway is a 22-mile long, volunteer-led heritage railway located in the Yorkshire Dales. It offers heritage diesel train services between Scruton (near Northallerton) and Leyburn and provides a variety of family-friendly experiences. Visitors can explore award-winning restored historic stations, enjoy free guided tours with costumed living history interpreters and learn about railway life in the 1900s.
The railway offers visitors on-train catering events including afternoon teas, fish & chips, gin and curry trains. It hosts an annual model railway show, Industrial Diesel Weekend and Diesel Gala. Every Christmas, it hosts THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Rides for over 50,000 visitors.
The railway’s infrastructure volunteers are actively working to re-open 5.5-miles of track between Leyburn and Redmire. This section of the railway has been closed to passengers since 2020, being predominantly constructed on ash ballast, wooden sleepers and 90lb North Eastern Rail which is heavily worn.
