Peyman, could you share a brief overview of your career so far?
I’m thrilled to have recently achieved Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution. This milestone represents a significant step in my journey as a railway engineering professional. Currently, I am a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Leeds, where I focus on developing climate-resilient railway infrastructure. With a PhD in Railway Engineering and over eight years of experience in both academic and practical roles, I have dedicated my career to advancing railway systems through innovative and sustainable solutions.

Why did you want to become professionally registered?

Throughout my career, I’ve been deeply passionate about advancing railway engineering and making meaningful contributions to safer, more sustainable infrastructure. Becoming professionally registered as a CEng with the Institution allows me to formally validate my skills and expertise while opening doors to new opportunities.

Professional Registration is essential for collaborating with industry leaders like Network Rail, helping me play a more significant role in addressing critical challenges such as climate resilience, lateral track stability, and the integration of recycled materials in railway systems. It also ensures that my work aligns with the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and innovation.

Additionally, being professionally registered will be a significant advantage for my future career, whether I continue in academia or transition to industry. It demonstrates my technical competence, leadership skills, and commitment to professional development, which are valuable assets in both sectors.

How did you find the process?

The process was both enriching and fulfilling. It gave me the chance to reflect on my academic activities, particularly to consolidate the insights I gained from the Institution’s webinars, which proved to be highly valuable. I also had sufficient time to prepare for my presentation, enabling me to confidently highlight my work during the Professional Review Interview.

The Institution’s resources, including sample materials and guidance for drafting the Professional Review Report, were incredibly useful in organising and presenting my accomplishments in line with the required competencies. Overall, the process was well-structured, supportive, and a thoroughly positive experience.

How will CEng recognition help you in your career?

Achieving CEng status is a significant milestone that will greatly enhance my career prospects. It establishes my credibility as a railway engineering professional and demonstrates my technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards.

This recognition will open doors to more impactful opportunities, whether in academia or the industrial sector, allowing me to lead innovative projects, collaborate with industry leaders, and contribute to advancing railway infrastructure. Additionally, it positions me to mentor and inspire the next generation of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence within the field.

CEng status also strengthens my ability to contribute to sustainable and climate-resilient railway systems, aligning my career trajectory with global priorities in infrastructure development and sustainability.
