We hope you find this summary of our Lunch & Learn session from 30 October, kindly prepared and presented by Jade Dover, to be helpful.
In today’s rail industry, LinkedIn is more than just a job-hunting tool—it’s a platform for building professional visibility, expanding your network, and staying updated on industry trends. In this week’s PWI Lunch & Learn session, Jade Dover, PWI Marketing Manager, shared valuable tips for using LinkedIn to propel your career, whether you’re actively job-seeking or simply looking to grow professionally.
Why LinkedIn?
LinkedIn offers unique benefits, like connecting with industry peers, following project updates, and showcasing your expertise. The platform’s demographic includes over one billion users, with recruiters actively searching for talent and candidates with optimised profiles having a 71% higher chance of landing interviews.
Profile Essentials
First impressions matter. A strong LinkedIn profile includes a professional headshot, a personalised URL, and a compelling headline. Jade emphasised that your headline should reflect not just your title but your passion—think “Electrification Engineer Driven by Innovation.” Your summary is another space to stand out: add keywords, achievements, and a hook that will make viewers want to learn more.
Keeping it Fresh
Keep your profile updated to maximise its effectiveness. Highlight your recent roles, skills, and accomplishments, including any volunteer or STEM activities, for example. Use LinkedIn’s endorsement feature by requesting recommendations from colleagues and connections—it’s a powerful form of social proof that enhances credibility.
Engage with the Network
To increase visibility, engage consistently by liking, commenting, and sharing content relevant to the rail industry. Posting once a week and joining industry-specific LinkedIn groups can keep your profile active and engaging. You can also follow key organisations such as the PWI and the Engineering Council, amongst many more, to stay informed.
Building Connections
Expand beyond people you know; connect with colleagues, rail industry professionals, and thought leaders. Use your network to learn about companies or job roles that might interest you. If you meet someone at an event, follow up by connecting on LinkedIn to solidify that connection online.
Content Tips for Engineers
Consistent posting helps. Use images, infographics, or videos to showcase projects and achievements. Content with images receives twice the engagement, and regular posting, even weekly, boosts visibility. Incorporating trending industry hashtags and relevant keywords will make your posts more discoverable.
Staying Secure
Finally, Jade addressed concerns about security. Set up two-factor authentication, use unique passwords, and keep your LinkedIn app updated for the latest security features. LinkedIn is built to be a professional space, so with these precautions, it’s a secure platform to promote your career.
Takeaway
A few steps on LinkedIn can significantly elevate your career in the rail industry. Optimise your profile, engage regularly, and consistently connect with the rail community. And remember, a little effort goes a long way—10 minutes a day on LinkedIn can keep you visible and connected to key industry opportunities.
