Iván completed our Track Engineering Diploma with Distinction and was awarded the PWI Technical Director Prize for Best in Class 2025. Below, he kindly shares his experience of the Track Engineering programme.

“As a Civil Engineer working in railway maintenance, the PWI Track Engineering Diploma has been an excellent opportunity to strengthen and refresh both the fundamental and advanced concepts that a Track Engineer needs in day-to-day practice. The programme provides a clear overview of how to approach track maintenance effectively and efficiently: identifying common defects, understanding the mechanisms and root causes behind them, and selecting practical interventions that target the source of the problem rather than only the symptoms.

A key benefit for me has been improving my ability to plan maintenance activities in short access windows while maintaining a safe system of work in a live railway environment. The course also reinforces how good engineering decisions and well-planned interventions help maintain the track in the best possible condition, reduce whole-life costs, and support a reliable and competitive mode of transport that is crucial for society and economic development.

What I enjoyed most was learning directly from the instructors’ real-world experience. The course is compact, well-organised, and covers a wide range of topics to a strong technical standard. I would like to sincerely thank the instructors, organisers, and everyone at the PWI for their support and attention to detail throughout the programme.”
