Belfast Grand central station is the largest fully integrated, multi-modal transport facility on the island of Ireland. It provides a flagship destination point for Belfast and is transforming local and international connectivity, encouraging active travel and creating a greener, healthier city and region.
The new station entered operational rail service in October 2024 as the culmination of one of the most significant rail infrastructure projects to be undertaken in Ireland. Requiring extensive changes to the existing rail infrastructure the project involved most rail engineering disciplines through it’s design and build stages.
This session will provide an overview of the main aspects of the project and the key challenges faced by the project team in delivering the requirements on a constrained site in the heart of major city. It will detail some of the drivers behind the design as well as outlining the S&T and permanent way solutions. Bespoke challenges are explained along with the solutions adopted in both design and construction in order to overcome them. The overall construction sequence will also be explained culminating in the successful commissioning.
