Potential Gains Through Climate Change Adaptation on WCML North

Since 2006 the West Coast Main Line has been closed north of Lancaster for over 100 days due to extreme weather, costing more than £25 million. This figure would be even higher if the costs to the wider community were included. The situation will only worsen if a holistic approach to weather management is not adopted, working with partners across the wider catchment area and looking beyond the confines of the railway boundary. By working in this way, the benefits to both the railway and the wider community can be maximised, while reducing the total financial investment required by Network Rail.
This presentation will outline what collective climate action might look like at key pinch points such as Carlisle and Shap, focusing on improvements in safety, reliability, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.

Those attending should assemble at Preston railway station below the Preston Pals War Memorial plaque (adjacent to the subway stairs on Platforms 3 and 4) at 16:15. They will then be accompanied from the Memorial to North Union House to join the meeting.
