Why did I want to become professionally registered?

Registration as an Engineering Technician seemed like an obvious progression route for me. Most of my experience has been acquired through practice, responsibility and experience gained while working on real-time, live railways rather than through an academic route. The Engineering Technician (EngTech) designation provided a formal means to recognise the applied competence, professional judgment, and accountability inherent in much of my daily work. Through registration by the Railway Engineering Institution, I obtained a professional qualification that accurately reflected how engineers operate day-to-day in rail.

What was my experience of the process?

Overall, I found the process to be well-structured, comprehensive and fair. The process supported reflection on real work undertaken, decision-making during periods of high pressure and adherence to the established standards applicable in my day-to-day work. The exercise highlighted the extensive experience developed throughout my career. Guidance and support received from the Institution was instrumental in translating my operational experience into professional evidence without creating unnecessary complexity.

How does registering as an EngTech provide recognition to aid in furthering my career?

Recognition as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) by the Engineering Council provides independent recognition of competence and professionalism in the rail industry. This recognition enhances credibility when working across organisations, regulatory bodies, clients, and international partners. Additionally, registration reinforces individual responsibility to uphold standards, continue developing skills, and contribute positively to the profession. Ultimately, registration serves as both recognition of past achievements and a strong indicator of how I wish to continue working in the future.
