Ben shares his journey to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, showcasing his path to Professional Registration through dedication and industry support.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

As a Track Engineer, I specialise in the design and technical assurance of railway tracks across both UK and International projects. My role involves producing track alignment designs, complex corridor models and specifications that meet industry standards and project requirements. I have over six years of industry experience, having worked in GHD for the previous 3+ years and Network Rail for over 4 years. Last year, I was awarded with a Distinction in a MSc in Railway Systems with the University of Birmingham and have successfully completed the requirements of the Level 7 Apprenticeship in Rail and Rail Systems Principal Engineer. 

Why did you want to become professionally registered

In 2018, I had the opportunity to join Network Rail through the Level 4 Rail Systems Apprenticeship. I was fortunate to be placed with the Track Design Team in Crewe, where I was introduced to the Professional Registration pathways within the first few weeks (thanks David Kennedy). From that moment, I knew I wanted to become a Chartered Engineer, understanding that the journey would be long but immensely valuable. For me, knowledge was key, both in learning and in giving back to the rail industry. I have always aspired to become a principal engineer in the field of Track/Pway Design, and attaining chartership will significantly aid in achieving this ambition. 

How did you find the process?

The process of Professional Registration is indeed a long journey that requires a great deal of discipline and focus. It is essential to have the support of peers throughout this process and time to allow for reflection. While the application itself is rather straightforward, this was helped by the amount of discipline applied throughout the many years of progress. The Level 4 and Level 7 apprenticeships I was fortunate to have been selected for, were incredibly beneficial as the apprenticeship KSB standards closely align with UK-SPEC for both EngTech and CEng. This alignment made the experience somewhat more manageable, particularly with the support of Birmingham University and the time given by both GHD and Network Rail.

How do you consider that being recognised with CEng status will help your career?

I believe that having CEng status will help my career in several ways. Firstly, it will provide validation of my knowledge and experience in the industry, demonstrating that I continually meet the high standards required to be awarded with CEng status. This recognition will enhance the level of confidence that industry leaders have in my engineering capability, making me a more trusted and respected professional in the industry. Additionally, it provides assurance to employers and clients that I possess the necessary skills and expertise to deliver high-quality work. I hope that CEng status will continue to provide me with new, exciting projects and opportunities, and that I will have the opportunity to sponsor others to achieve Professional Registration.
