Tony is a Chartered Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the rail industry, currently serving as Operations Director at DYWIDAG and Vice President of the Permanent Way Institution for Central England.

Professionally registered as CEng with the Permanent Way Institution and IEng with the Institution of Civil Engineers, he also holds accreditations with the Association for Project Management (APM) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Tony, why did you want to become professionally registered?
It wasn’t until I joined Murphy that I became aware of Professional Engineering Institutions and the Professional Registration process. A lot of my new colleagues were members of various engineering bodies and many were Chartered Engineers. I felt that, in order to hold my own and be respected as a credible engineer, I ought to do the same. Having spent my career in rail, the PWI was the natural choice to be my home institution.

How did you find the process?
I decided to progress through the registration levels incrementally, starting with EngTech. This not only gave me insight into the process, but also boosted my self-confidence and gave me time to broaden my engineering experience with the different type of projects I was now being involved in. I was fortunate enough to be able to complete a civil engineering degree apprenticeship through my employer, achieving IEng as part of that end-point assessment, but Chartership was always the aim and I found the PWI staff to be incredibly helpful and approachable at all stages.

How do you consider being recognised with CEng status as helping you in your career?
Being able to say that I am a Chartered Engineer is a big deal. It’s an accolade recognised across employers, industries and national borders! It’s important for my employer to be able to demonstrate that I’m a competent resource to deal with the responsibilities of my role, and that helps them to win work. On a personal level, it feels like a validation of the experiences I’ve gained, the decisions I’ve made and the hard work that’s gone in along the way – but it’s not over, and I know that the work continues, not only to maintain my own competence, but to help and support others to achieve their goals.
