Eamonn Maloney, Joint Managing Director at Pro Rail Services, shares how he achieved Chartership with the PWI.

I am the Joint Managing Director of Pro Rail Services Ltd, with specific responsibilities for: Research & Development (R&D), Contractors Engineering Manager, Business Development, Design Management & Assurance Project Delivery, Compliance to NR Standards, Network Rail Framework Contracts Management – Main Lead contact for our business, and Sustainability – we are a Partner with the Supply Chain Sustainability School (I sit on the infrastructure, plant and carbon groups). 

I have built a Rail and Civil Engineering Design & Build business that retains a Network Rail (NR) Principal Contractors Licence (PCL) and a Plant Operating Service (POS) that delivers solutions to Network Rail through our direct NR Framework Contracts on: Civils & Structures, Track Drainage / UTXs / Permanent Way, Vegetation, Level Crossings / Road Rail Access Points and On Track Plant (OTP) across all English NR Routes. I am the Contractor’s Engineering Manager for our business on these contracts, too.

I oversee the provision of scoping, survey, planning & railway access plus design and build solutions (both planned & reactive) to the NR Tier 1 Contractors on the CP6/7 Multi-Functional Framework Contracts too, to support their Track and Off Track Projects.

My key passion is problem solving and I think I am pretty good at that, in addition to ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of what we do. 

Why did you want to become professionally registered?

 Continuing professional development and personal challenges are really important to me; I don’t believe in standing still, and I really enjoy learning and developing my skills to the best of my ability.  

The route to Chartership by the PWI gave me a realistic chance to find the time and get the support I needed to achieve my goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer.   

I want to use my achievement to inspire my colleagues to achieve their Eng Tech, IEng, and CEng qualifications in due course, aiding with their continuing professional development. 

How did you find the process?

One has to be realistic and say that it is hard work, but if you follow the process as outlined by the PWI and allow realistic time in your diary and have a supportive team around you, then achieving this goal is realistic. 

From a lessons learned perspective, I would advise everybody to seriously read the competence criteria at the start of the process to aid with structuring your submission.  

How will CEng recognition help you in your career?

At this stage in my career and as Managing Director of Pro Rail Services Ltd, and with two sons and a niece who work in the railway sector, my job now is to inspire the next generation coming through to support their careers and to bring benefit to the project delivery of UK Railway Infrastructure Projects.
